The Roanoke Canal Museum was the Roanoke Navigation Company in the 1820's.
Begun before 1819, and completed in 1823, the Roanoke Canal was built as the North Carolina segment of the ambitious
Roanoke Navigation System. It was designed to connect the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with Norfolk, over a distance of
400 miles.
A Batteau is a flat bottomed boat
Brunswick Belle
This batteau was built by Buddy High and his boy scout troop and donated to the Roanoke Canal Center.
The names, from the French batteau, "boat," and Bateaux, "boats," were commonly rendered in English as "battoe"
and "battoes." Thousands of Bateaux were constructed by British, French, and American forces and used in the river corridors
of New York in all the colonial wars, the American Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812
